Here's the story of how one idea grew into a world-renowned corporation.

The year was 1964, the place, Garland, Texas and as with all great businesses, Garrett Metal Detectors started out with a solid dream in mind – to "make the best metal detector and sell it at a fair and reasonable cost." This mission, combined with customer commitment and loyalty, is the source of Charles and Eleanor Garrett's huge success.

Bad Metal Detector Inspires the Best

To pull this off, Charles needed to have the proper knowledge. Flash back to 1950 when Charles joined the U.S. Navy and quickly earned the rank of Electrician Mate 2nd Class Petty Officer. After the Navy, he received a degree in Electrical Engineering from Lamar University in Beaumont Texas. With degree in hand, Charles went to work for Texas Instruments in the Space and Electronics division. In 1962, the Garretts moved to Dallas where Charles became Project Engineer with the Geotechnical Corporation and Eleanor continued her career as a schoolteacher.

A few years later something serendipitous happened – Charles rented a commercial metal detector and found it to be completely unsatisfactory. This incident inspired Charles to design, develop and build the best ground-search metal detector on the market. By 1967, Garrett was competing successfully with more than 35 companies who already had a long history of making and selling metal detectors.

Improved Security for the Olympic Games, Airports & the World

It was not until September 1983 that Garrett began his journey into security metal detectors. Charles was asked to develop a walk-through metal detector for the 1984 Summer Olympic Games held in Los Angeles – the tragedy at 1972's Munich Games created a need for increased security.
