"Big kids helping little kids"

It's a special person who's willing to try and make a difference in their corner of the world. That's just what Donnie Rae Dixon did when he started Hometown Heroes, a North Carolina group of "big kids helping little kids" who are sick or injured.

It all started several years ago. Donnie was an officer with the Monroe, North Carolina Police Department, when he helped one child – a young boy with a terminal disease. From there, Donnie began involving other police officers, asking them to "adopt" a child, where time was shared and bonds established.

The rest is history. Today, Hometown Heroes has grown to include numerous other community leaders involved in fundraising activities – including an annual Hometown Heroes 4-day motorcycle ride.

CHIEF donates $10,000

This year the ride began September 7 and went from Monroe to the Outer Banks in search of donations, with the Heroes' young fans there to send them off in style. Our own Jeff Tousa, President of CHIEF, was there, too. "It was really touching to see these 'tough' cops' hearts melt when they spoke about their relationships with the children who were at the sendoff," Jeff said.

After meeting with the management of Hometown Heroes, Jeff felt the organization was worthy of a $10,000 donation. When asked, "Why Hometown Heroes?" Jeff replied, "We wanted to help and decided this would be a great charity to support because of the good will it provides the community and the market we serve. Our support makes a difference... with it, a few unlucky kids can realize some of the dreams they have as well as receive the every-day necessities like food, clothes and medicine they need. We're proud to help out a local organization that gives so freely of its time and resources to these special children."

Brandon and India

As a company, CHIEF helps sponsor 26 children; two of which are named Brandon and India. Brandon is being treated for Crohn's Disease as well as a brain tumor. This boy is amazing. He's got his own website with pictures of all the places he's been and things he's done. Despite the medical nightmare he's been through Brandon continues to live his life to the fullest – pushing himself no matter what. He's truly an inspiration to every one of us.

India is new to the Hometown Heroes family. She is very young and very beautiful. She also has cancer. But the Heroes are there making a difference, too. Through their charitable work, Heroes has had their family car repaired and provided much need everyday necessities. And with our donation, children like Brandon and India have even more help to get the things they and their family need during this challenging time in their lives.
