PILR Assists with U.S. Department of Justice Bulletproof Vest Partnership ProgramPRESS CONFERENCE Revised Date: Wednesday, April 4, 2007 at 3:00 p.m., 7409 E. 7th Street, Duenweg, MO 64841
Duenweg, Missouri PILR Technology Services, one of the area's leading technology service companies, recently announced that it will offer assistance to area law enforcement officials in submitting applications for the United States Department of Justice's Bulletproof Vest Partnership Program (BVP). PILR will set up 6 computer terminals in their training facility with high-speed Internet access. They will then offer FREE assistance to local law enforcement agencies on how to fill out the applications. They have also invited several national Bulletproof Vest Vendors to show brochures and demo vests to help departments find the right vests for them. The Office of Justice Program's (OJP) Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) administers the BVP Program. Each year, the program offers up to a 50% reimbursement to qualified law enforcement agencies for bulletproof vests. According to DOJ guidelines, applicable groups include: police officers, sheriff deputies, correctional officers, parole and probation agents, prosecutors, and judicial officials. It is up to each department to make sure all applications are submitted correctly with the proper signatures and information within the established deadlines. The funds for this year's program may be used towards the purchase of vests ordered on or after April 1, 2007. Applications must be submitted via the online BVP system, by 5:00 pm (Eastern Time), Monday, April 30, 2007. Each vest purchased with these funds must meet National Institute of Justice (NIJ) standards. PILR recommends that profiles should be updated no later than April 16th, 2007 in order to meet the April 30th application deadline. While conducting research for PILR's Government Affairs Department, PILR found that many departments are registered for the BVP program, but their information is out of date, or lacking in data requested which could prevent them from getting allocated funds to help off-set costs for newer or additional vests. "During our research, we found that many regional departments didn't even know about the program or that their information is no longer applicable", said Edward Hattery, PILR's Government Affairs Analyst. "In light of recent shootings involving law enforcement officials, we felt compelled to draw attention to these existing programs as quickly as possible." Diamond Police Chief, Keith Brumfield found that his profile was out of date and incorrectly recorded. "When PILR contacted me, I knew about the program, but didn't know how to proceed and didn't have the time to dedicate to filling out the applications," said Chief Brumfield. "We are a small department compared to others in the area and we need all the help we can get to protect our officers."
