One Fire and Rescue Glove?
"Can you use one glove for both structural fire fighting and extrication rescue operations?" It's a question we've heard a lot, and you've probably wondered about it too. To learn more, we talked with Tom Ragan of Shelby Specialty Gloves:
"I look at it this way: Would you wear the same suit for structural fire fighting as wildland, or technical rescue? That answer is no, and for good reason you have different missions with different requirements for each type of response. The same holds for gloves. Why wear one glove for more than one activity, when you can wear a superior glove designed for just that response?
"A good fire fighting glove offers limited protection from cut, puncture, heat, viral and chemical exposures. It will meet NFPA 1971, Standard on Protective Ensembles for Structural Fire Fighting and Proximity Fire Fighting, 2007 Edition. It will encompass thermal protection equal to or better than NFPA compliant turnouts. This level of thermal protection helps protect the hands from heat and prevent hand burns in a hot structural environment.
"A good extrication rescue glove offers limited protection from cut, puncture, viral and chemical exposures. It will meet NFPA 1951, Standard on Protective Ensemble for Technical Rescue Incidents, 2007 Edition. It will encompass very little thermal protection so that finger and hand dexterity is maximized. This less insulated glove allows users better dexterity for use with extrication and rescue tools.
"If you combine these two applications into one glove, then you could wind up with a poorly insulated fire glove or a bulky extrication rescue glove. The end result would be a glove that does not work safely for both applications."
Thanks, Tom. That's why CHIEF carries the best in both structural firefighting gloves and extrication gloves, like these two gloves from Shelby:
