Have you heard of sites such as Facebook, My Space and Twitter? You might be familiar with these "Web 2.0" or "social media" websites, but you might not know that these sites, particularly Twitter, are becoming an important way for public safety agencies to communicate and relay information.

From the Los Angles Fire Department to the Coralville, Iowa Police Department, public safety agencies nationwide are becoming members of Twitter, and are using the free service to communicate incidents and safety information to the public and to colleagues.

Setting up a Twitter account is fast and free. Twitter also has easy-to-use search features to help you find other Twitter users. To help you get started, you can also follow CHIEF on Twitter. New NFPA "On Scene" Safety Requirements

When new NFPA standards are issued, we want to make sure you have the products you need to comply. Below are the new requirements for the revised NFPA 1901 Standard for Automotive Fire Apparatus, effective January 2009. This new standard spells our requirements for "on scene" safety.

Here is a breakdown of some of the new NFPA "on scene" requirements (note: this is not an exhaustive list):

Requirement: ANSI/ISEA 207 vests required for each seated position on apparatus.
Solution: Carolina Safety Sport ANSI 207 Public Safety Zip-N-Rip Breakaway Traffic Vest (part #207ZRLM) in regular or jumbo, with legend printing available on front and rear.
Requirement: Minimum of 5 fluorescent orange traffic cones, 28" high with a 6" and 4" retro-reflective stripe, on each apparatus.
Solution: VizCon five pack pop-up cones (part #Q5T5O28R or #Q5T5O28R5), Allsafe Services & Materials Cones – High-impact traffic cones (part #TC-28-6-4) and Pack & Pop 4-pack cones (part #TCC28).
Requirement: Minimum 5 illuminated warning devices, such as highway flares or fluorescent orange traffic cones with illumination capabilities.
Solution: Orion Standard Safety Flares (part #9340), Flare Container (part #CYFC30C), EMI LZ LED Flare Kit (part #EMI2024) and EMI Flashback Five LED Baton (part #EMI2010).
