Hometown Heroes - Big Kids Helping Little Kids
CHIEF Donates $15,000 to Charlotte, NC, Law Enforcement Charity
Hometown Heroes is a group of "big kids helping little kids" who are sick or injured. Started by a now-retired Monroe Police Officer, Donnie Dixon, Hometown Heroes is supported by the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office and assists children in North Carolina's Union and Mecklenburg counties. CHIEF has been involved with Hometown Heroes since 2007, and recently made a $15,000 donation to the organization.
"Words cannot adequately describe the level of support we receive from CHIEF," says Captain Mike Smith, Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office. "CHIEF's support has taken us to a different level. Not only do they donate needed funds, they get involved. They attend events, they interact with the children. CHIEF is a vital part of what we do."
CHIEF is proud to support community organizations like Hometown Heroes. "CHIEF has always worked hard to support our public safety community and be a good corporate citizen," says CHIEF President Jeff Tousa. "But it's also about just doing the right thing for these families, and especially for the children who endure such difficult, regular medical treatments."

Vendor Spotlight: Whelen Engineering
When it comes to public safety, it's all about the gear. But what's the story behind the companies who design and produce the equipment you rely on every day?
Every month, the CHIEF Star highlights one of our 300 vendors and tells you more about their history, their products, and their commitment to serving you. We call it our "Vendor Spotlight". Look for it in each monthly newsletter, or find them online at any time at CHIEFsupply.com/resources/vendors.
October's Vendor Spotlight: Whelen Engineering
Whelen began in 1952, when George W. Whelen developed a rotating aircraft "anti-collision beacon." This original concept was expanded to create a magnetic mounted beacon used by police, fire departments, public safety officials and to convert hearses into ambulance service vehicles. Full story »

Grant News by Kurt Bradley, CHIEF Grants
September Recap - Public Safety Grants
Do you ever wonder what's wrong with kids today? Sometimes I do too but this month I'm happy to tell you about something that's right with kids.
In December 2007, I taught a grant seminar in Pennsylvania. One of the 35 students was a 14-year-old boy named Joshua Chilcote, representing the Geistown VFD. Another member of the department had planned to come, but at the last minute couldn't make it. Joshua stepped up to take his spot. He was a great student, but little did I know how skilled a grant writer he would turn out to be.
In March, as the FY2008 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program opened for applications, I received a rough draft of an AFGP application from Joshua. Not only was it written well, it was for a new fire engine one of the toughest awards to be won anywhere, even for a seasoned grant writer. By law, only 25% of the total money in the AFG program can be awarded for new fire vehicles. That means an application for a fire engine has to be close to perfect and Joshua's was.
On August 29, 2008, Joshua's application paid off big time. His department was awarded the grant for a new $260,000 fire engine. Besides making a whole lot of firefighters happy, Joshua, now 15, made history as possibly the youngest grant writer ever to win a grant from the Department of Homeland Security.
Some might chalk it up to luck, but not me. This young man demonstrated that with the proper skills and training, anything is possible.
You can learn more about Joshua and his road to winning this grant here: CHIEF Grants: Won For the Record - 14-Year-Old Joshua Chilcote Winning Grant Awards VFD New Truck. And remember you can write winning grants too. Just like Joshua did, attend a CHIEF Grants Seminar to build up your grant-writing skills. Our 2008-2009 schedule, and online signup, are available at CHIEFgrants.com.
Congratulations, Joshua and Geistown Volunteer Fire Department!
