Are Your Smoke Alarms Working?
"Practice Your Escape Plan" during Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 7-13 Smoke alarms are your family's first line of defense in your household fire escape plan. In addition to helping your loved ones act quickly in a fire emergency, smoke detectors will help you and your family sleep better at night, knowing this crucial line of defense is in working order.
But is it?
Fire Prevention Week is the perfect time to check your home's smoke alarms. Here are some things to check:
Test your smoke alarm. Smoke detectors have a test button, press it to check that its tone system is working. Also check the alarm's detection capacity: our Smoke Alarm Tester is an easy, inexpensive spray that you can use to check your smoke alarms every year.
Not working? If your alarm doesn't work, it may need a new Duracell 9V alkaline battery (available individually or in a box of 12). Want a really long-life battery? Replace your standard 9V battery with an Ultralife 9-Volt Lithium Battery. These long-life lithium batteries last up to 5 times longer than ordinary alkaline 9V batteries!
Still not working... or wondering how old that smoke alarm is? Sounds like it's time for a new smoke detector. Smoke alarms need to be replaced roughly every 5 years (check your specific model). Protect your family with new smoke alarms today!
