Halloween Safety & Great Costumes
Fun & Safety at Trick-or-Treat Time
Halloween is a holiday many of us look forward to. Costumes, parties, handing out candy to trick-or-treaters, and taking our little ones on a costumed quest around the neighborhood are great autumn traditions. With Halloween fun, however, also comes the responsibility of having a safe Halloween.
For families trying to keep their children safe, or for the fire or police department seeking ideas on Halloween safety programs, here are some resources that can help you out:

Thousands of Ballistic Vests to Protect Iraqi Cops
In our August newsletter, we told you about the Brotherhood of the Badge and a shipment of 4,000 brand-new ballistic vests that were on their way to police officers in Iraq. We are proud to say that the vests have arrived, helping Iraq's fledging police force be safer in the field.
"The first of the 2,250 vests arrived in Iraq just the other day," said Brotherhood of The Badge founder, Mike Harris. Another 2,000 vests are on their way.

September Recap - Public Safety Grants
The biggest news in September grants involves two of the government's most popular grant programs, as well as a special grant program from America's biggest retailer. First, the application phase for the Commercial Equipment Direct Assistance Program (CEDAP) closed on Sept. 22, after receiving thousands of applications from public safety agencies nationwide. If you submitted a CEDAP application, here is some important follow-up information for CEDAP applicants »
Second, as of press time the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFGP) is expected to begin announcing 2006 awards sometime during early October. As usual, there is bureaucracy to navigate and paperwork to file, and until that's done, we'll continue hanging on pins and needles. Rest assured though folks, the awards are coming. Check CHIEF Grants News and the AFGP Fire Grant Support website for updates.
Lastly, Wal-Mart, America's largest retailer, is offering up to $3,000 to America's public safety agencies. Through Oct. 31, just contact your local Wal-Mart, SAM's CLUB or distribution center about the Wal-Mart Safe Neighborhood Heroes Grant. It could land your agency up to $3,000 in cash or merchandise. By the way, this is also a great way to offset your tuition and travel costs for any of our CHIEF Grants Seminars!
