5 CHIEF Grants Students Win SAFER Grants

CHIEF Grants has helped 5 fire departments receive over $1.5 million in grants for staffing and recruitment under the 2005 Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant Program. Three of those students also received in-person training at a CHIEF Grants Seminar (** CHIEF Grants seminar student):

  • ** Bolivar FD, MO, $82,085
  • Pocahontas-Old Ripley VFD, IL, $10,680
  • ** Rock Community Fire Protection District, MO, $900,000
  • ** Belton Emergency Services, MO, $300,000
  • Squaw Valley FD, CA, $300,000

SAFER grants award grants directly to volunteer, combination, and career fire departments to help the departments increase their cadre of firefighters. Ultimately, the goal is for SAFER grantees to enhance their ability to attain 24-hour staffing and thus assuring their communities have adequate protection from fire and fire-related hazards.

SAFER grants have two activities that will help grantees attain this goal: 1) hiring of firefighters and 2) recruitment and retention of volunteer firefighters.
