How can the Research on Policing and Public Safety Interventions help your Law Enforcement department?

  • Conduct process and outcome evaluations of policing and public safety interventions to improve law enforcement policies at the State and local levels
  • No matching funds requirement. Offering an optional match can be advantageous because the NIJ has limited funds, and a match can help defray the costs of more expensive projects. However, in all cases the quality of the proposal is more important.
  • Most awards in this program range from below $100,000 to around $300,000. Not many awards are given for larger amounts
  • CHIEF offers the free services of grant consultants to assist you throughout the application process **

What is it?

The purpose of this program is to conduct process and outcome evaluations of policing and public safety interventions to improve law enforcement policies at the State and local levels. Though a range of issues is eligible for funding, the funding agency is particularly interested in the following topics:

  • Policing Policies and Management (Leadership; Training; and Integrity)
  • Public Safety Interventions (Gang Violence; Firearms Violence; and Situational Crime Prevention)

Proposed evaluations should use the most appropriate and rigorous methodologies feasible for evaluating the effectiveness of public safety interventions. When possible, randomized experimental approaches are encouraged, although the funding agency also encourages the use of quasi-experimental methods when needed, particularly the action research method.

Funding Notes: The funding agency anticipates that $1 million will be available to fund three to five awards. The amount awarded is contingent upon the funds available and the quality of applications received. The funding agency does not fund:

  • Provision of training or direct service;
  • Proposals primarily intended to purchase equipment, materials, or supplies; and
  • Work that may be eligible for funding from another specific solicitation.
