    • Well casings
    • Manhole covers

  • Here are some rules of thumb to how far down your magnetic locator will be able to detect objects:
    • PK Nails: 6" to 18" (depending on size of nail)
    • MagNails: up to 36' away depending on size of nail
    • Valve boxes, Curb boxes, etc…. 4' to 8' depending on % of steel or iron contents
    • Surveyor Corner Markers: 5/8" x 18" steel rebar up to 20' deep
    • Well casings up to 30' or more deep
    • Steel or iron water or gas pipe, lying horizontally: 4" pipe, 4 to 6 feet; 8" pipe, 8 to 10 feet, etc.; with "peak of signal" at joints
    • Sewer/utility lids of cast iron: depends greatly on the structure the lid is capping/covering: 2' to 20' or more (the vertical casing the lid is covering may be stronger than the cover)
  • Keep in mind: any object lying on it side (oriented horizontally) will be weaker than if it were lying in a vertical position
    • An object lying horizontally will have at least two "peak signals" (one directly over each end)
    • An object oriented vertically will have one STRONG signal directly over it
    • An object oriented vertically in the Northern Hemisphere will be stronger if the Negative end (-) is pointed up, rather than the Positive (+) end
