  • About BLACKHAWK! Assisted Opening Knives: An assisted opener is a manual knife that includes a drive spring mechanism to open the blade. To open the knife, you begin with the normal manual process of pivoting the blade open, in this case with the ambidextrous thumb studs. Once the blade reaches about a 30-degree angle to the handle, the drive spring gains mechanical advantage, takes over, and drives the blade the rest of the way into the open position. In general terms, an assisted opener is not a "switchblade". Virtually all legal definitions of switchblades or automatic knives specify that the opening process must require pressure on a button, lever, or other device in the handle of the knife. Since an assisted opener's operation begins like that of a standard manual knife, with direct pressure to a portion of the blade, it does not meet this definition. However, knife laws are very complex and can vary significantly from one area to another. It is therefore the customer's responsibility to research and comply with the knife laws in the areas where you live and travel.
