• Modified to meet new standards: These new shelters have been modified to meet the new standard. There are two ways to be sure your shelter meets the new standards:
  • The outside label NSN (4240-01-498-3194) has a "C" on the end to indicate that it has been manufactured to meet current Forest Service specifications
  • The inside packaging has a pink label (formerly white) to also indicate that it has been manufactured to meet current Forest Service specifications
  • In radiant heat, 22% reduction in temperature rise compared to old fire shelter. 59% reduction in heat flux, compared to old fire shelter.
  • In direct flame, 81% reduction in temperature rise, compared to old shelter. 97% reduction in heat flux compared to old shelter
• Better material strength, out and in:
  • Outer layer: woven silica laminated to aluminum foil
  • Inner layer: fiberglass laminated to aluminum foil
  • Outer foil layer reflects radiant heat. Woven silica slows heat passage to interior. Inner foil prevents heat from being radiated to person inside shelter and acts as a barrier to gases that can be released by the adhesive
• New shape with rounded ends for extra safety:
  • Allows person to lie prone to protect underside of body and to breathe cooler air at ground surface
  • Rounded ends scatter radiant heat away from shelter
• Shake handles and strap-free tent opening add faster deployment and opening time
• Larger dimensions: fits in a bigger case that's also a protective fire shelter liner

  • Provides more insulating air space between the shelter material and the occupant
  • Prevents the shelter from being damaged when a larger person stretches out inside the shelter and pushes hard against the shelter material
